Warm Spiced Apple Juice with Cinnamon and Star Anise
Warm spiced apple juice simmered with cinnamon, cloves, star anise and orange. A cozy, kid-friendly Christmas drink for 4 that is ready in about 15 minutes.
On cold days I like a warm mug that everybody can share, and this spiced apple juice is exactly that. The cinnamon and star anise fill the house with a cozy smell, and the drink is naturally sweet. I love that it is simple enough to make for the whole family.
Saúl’s Tip
Look for cloudy, unfiltered apple juice if you can. It has a fuller apple flavor, so you need little or no added sweetener.
Tips for Success
- Keep the heat low. Boiling can make the spices bitter and dull the apple flavor.
- Use whole spices, not ground. They keep the juice clear.
- Taste before adding honey. Many apple juices are sweet enough already.
- A squeeze of lemon makes the flavors pop.
Make-Ahead and Storage
Strain the cooled juice into a jar and chill for up to 3 days. Reheat gently over low heat until steaming. For a party, multiply the recipe and keep it warm in a slow cooker on the lowest setting for up to 3 hours.
Variations
- Add 1 oz of bourbon or spiced rum to each mug for an adults-only version.
- Add a few slices of fresh ginger to the pan for a spicy kick.
- Replace half the apple juice with pear juice.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make spiced apple juice in a slow cooker?
Yes. Combine everything except the honey in a slow cooker and heat on low for 2 hours. Keep it on the warm setting while guests help themselves.
Is it safe for kids?
Yes. It has no alcohol. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving small children.
Should I use apple juice or apple cider?
Either works. Cloudy, unfiltered juice or fresh cider has a fuller apple flavor than clear juice.
